How long can Comfrey Cream be used for?

Comfrey Cream is intended for short-term use only — small amounts on unbroken skin, not covered by a dressing, for up to 10 days at a time. Use should not exceed 4–6 weeks in a year.

Why should Comfrey Cream only be used short term?

Comfrey Cream contains naturally occurring pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which carry a risk of toxicity if too much is used, used for too long, or if covered by a dressing (which increases absorption). For this reason it is a Registered medicine and restricted to short-term use only.

General Information

Is there anything to consider before using Herbal Creams?

Do not apply Comfrey on occlusive dressings (air and water tight). If you are under the care of a practitioner for any disease or serious condition, please discuss with them before starting any M&P products. If you are taking any medications, consult with your healthcare professional.

Are there any side effects from using Herbal Creams?

Herbal Creams are very well tolerated and safe for all to use, and may be used when on medications. If you experience any skin irritation, please discontinue use and consult your practitioner, as some people experience sensitivity to herbal extracts.

Why do Herbal Creams say "For external use on unbroken skin only"?

This is a blanket statement applied to the herbal cream range as the creams are not sterile and not intended for use on deep wounds or deep burns. However, Herbal Creams can safely be used on minor skin abrasions, minor cuts and mild skin irritation. Tea Tree or Calendula are suitable where skin may be slightly compromised. The exception is Comfrey cream, which should not be occluded (covered with a dressing) and should only be used as directed and for its specified label indications.
